The Great Migration is the movement of thousands of wildebeest from Serengeti in Tanzania into Masai Mara Reserve in Kenya. It is one of the world’s most spectacular and thrilling displays of wildlife behavior.
For a good Migration experience, we recommend planning your travel for mid-July to August. This is when the migration typically starts properly with the larger herds of wildebeest beginning the move into Masai Mara. The migration takes place till the end of August, before declining into mid-September.
During this time Masai Mara becomes a spectacle to behold.

Overview
Maasai Mara, also sometimes spelled Masai Mara and locally known simply as The Mara, is a large national game reserve in Narok, Kenya, contiguous with the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. It is named in honor of the Maasai people, the ancestral inhabitants of the area, who migrated to the area from the Nile Basin. Their description of the area when looked at from afar: “Mara” means “spotted” in the local Maasai language, because of the short bushy trees which dot the landscape.
The Maasai Mara & Community
- The Maasai people make up a community that spans northern, central and southern Kenya and northern parts of Tanzania.
- As pastoralists, the community holds the belief that they own all of the cattle in the world.
- The Maasai rely on their lands to sustain their cattle, as well as themselves and their families.
- All members of the "Big Five" – lion, African leopard, African bush elephant, African buffalo, black and white rhinos – are found here all year round
